MacGuffin - the term was popularized by Alfred Hitchcock and with his screenwriter Angus McPhail. MacGuffin could be an object, a person, a place, or anything that may serve as an important in the story but eventually diminished and you'll just realized at the end of the story "Where that thing have gone to?" (See other definitions at Elements of CinemaMerriam-Webstertvtropes and Wikipedia)
